The Biome Pack
How can our products better integrate with the environment to create a more healthy and symbiotic relationship? This speculative pack of clothing and apparel is designed to simultaneously leverage materials from unique environments in a sustainable way, and educate consumers about how to better partner with our surroundings
Grassland biome
The grasslands are large, rolling terrains of grasses, flowers, and herbs. Covering twice the area suitable for crop production, the potential role of grasslands for global food security should be better recognized. Ruminant grazers are efficient converters of non-edible plant biomass such as grass, into human-edible energy and nutrients, and can do so without competing with humans for use of crops for foodstuffs.
Aquatic biome
Plastics make up a shocking 80% of all marine debris. So much that by 2050, there is expected to be more plastic pollution than fish, by weight, in the ocean. Once plastics enter the sea, sun, wind, and wave activity break them down into smaller fragments called microplastics which are swept up in the water cycle, returning to land via precipitation and impacting soil quality, and contaminating our food supply.
Forest biome
Threats to the world’s forests are growing. Due to an increased population and shifts in diet, expanding agriculture is responsible for most of the world’s deforestation. Illegal and unsustainable logging, usually resulting from the demand for cheap wood and paper, is responsible for most of the degradation of the world’s forests —the most significant threat to the world’s forests.
Desert biome
Due to the limited number of infestations and the potential for rapid spread in Western Australia, wheel cactus is one of the highest priorities for eradication. Opuntia robusta has been prioritized at a national level as a Weed of National Significance. Once exterminated, the mature leaves can be used to extract proteins and fibers to make an organic bio-resin used in the production of cactus-based leather.
